Paper Abstract:

Stroke and cerebrovascular diseases are among of the causes for long term disabilities (Harvey et al, 2008). Stroke itself is still becoming a problem in Indonesia, which can be seen from the rise of stroke cases in these recent years. One of the most important needs for stroke rehabilitation is for a home based therapy tool, which can be fulfilled with mobile games technology. Especially for hand function training because it needs more commitment and longer time to recover. This paper reviews research in the field of health, technology, human computer interaction, game design and psychology on how to develop mobile games for home based stroke therapy that trains hand function training emphasizing on patientÂ’s immersion and motivation but still has therapeutic benefits for Indonesian stroke patients. First, kinds of therapy for hand function are researched. Second potential technology are reviewed, which ended up as mobile devices chosen because it has high user base, high usage time, and easily obtainable. Game as a type of mobile application is chosen because it is proven to increase motivation in patient. And then factors to create therapeutic games for stroke and how to create highly motivating and immersive games are considered. The conclusion is highly immersive and motivating games can be made but still be able to have therapeutic benefits, as there are some intersecting aspects.
