Paper Abstract:      In times of a severe economic crisis, new and innovative approaches are needed to address problems of rising social and economic inequality, unsolved gender disparities and the formidable challenges of climate change. Social innovation is a promising concept in this regard. It has potentials to contribute to forms of economic growth that also address social and environmental needs at a grassroots level. This reflection paper argues that the potential of social innovation can be further enhanced by systematically building on the possibilities and strengths of crowdsourcing and crowdfunding. We argue that by integrating crowdsourcing and crowdfunding approaches social innovators and social entrepreneurs would benefit in multiple ways. We especially highlight how the focus of funding opportunities could be expanded and the reputation of social innovation among the broad public could be raised. Finally a new type of platform is sketched out which, by building on mashup principles, could help to further promote social innovation.
