Paper Abstract:
|
Qualitative research has been used by many information systems (IS) researchers since 1991, and there is still a continuous trend for its use, as it helps the researcher to understand the managerial and organisational contexts in which IS/IT is developed and used. However, in comparison with quantitative research, it can be declared that the latter is more common and adoptable by IS researchers. In the quantitative approach, tests and criteria are well defined and used for evaluating the quality of quantitative research, which is not the case in qualitative research. Therefore, this, among other reasons, provides justification for the fact that the majority of published papers in IS journals are quantitatively orientated, according to a survey of the top IS journals from 1991 to 2001 (Chen & Hirschheim, 2004). This paper provides taxonomy criteria to evaluate qualitative IS research based on the experience of using this approach in empirical research. The criteria are classified into: quality of research product (outcomes), quality of research process, and quality of evidence. |
