Paper Abstract:      With the increasing trend of social computing and the development of technology, narrative is becoming a major representational method in the mass media and the academic world. More researchers apply conversational narrative in the virtual world, intelligent tutor systems, and other hypertext interfaces. However, serious application of narrative as a representational method in education needs both theoretical and empirical support that are lacking in the current literature. This paper investigates the properties of conversational narrative from which it shows how conversational narrative functions as a unique method to communicate meanings and affect the reader. The paper then introduces an empirical study designed to test these proposed properties of conversational narrative, and conversational narrative is contrasted to expository text as the design method in an online course.
