Paper Abstract:      Handheld computers are versatile tools but their limited screen-display areas and distinctive interfaces may constitute a unique class of access barriers for older adults. The present study explored--across the adult lifespan--changes in sensation, perception and cognition and their power to predict specific problems with using a Personal Digital Assistant (PDA). The results showed an age-related increase in data entry errors and in the help required for carrying out PDA tasks. On tasks that required extensive navigation the youngest participants made more errors than the older, but the latter requested or required more frequent help, thereby highlighting the different learning styles of participants from different age groups.
