Paper Abstract:      Ontologies hold great importance to modern knowledge based systems. They enable a common understanding in order to share knowledge and reuse information resources that can be communicated and exchanged between humans or software agents. This paper after reviewing a vast amount of literature on ontologies, concludes that there is a lack of understanding of ontology alongside a common accepted definition. This paper contributes as follows: First, after investigating different definitions of ontology presented over the past 15 years and comparing them, it can be seen that ontology should consist of five elements. Second, with the knowledge of the five elements, a new model ‘Cognibase’ is presented which can be defined as a representation of ontology intended for use in computer based applications and support ontology development. Also our Cognibase model can help unify all representations of ontology so that they can be used and implemented without ambiguity. It is also shown that it can be used to represent other conceptual structures. And last, the differentiation of our model from other similar conceptual structures is presented.
