Paper Abstract:      The purpose of this paper is to assess the use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in public institutions in Mozambique. It is also the main of this paper to assess the spatial data sharing among public institutions. In order to meet these goals six institutions in Mozambique were visited during the period of June to December in 2008. Various GIS applications have been used by different public institutions in Mozambique. However, spatial data is not used in standard and collaborative ways. Thus the benefits of sharing are not yet recognized. Spatial data which include base maps, thematic data are controlled and updated by CENACARTA, and later on used by different entities. Others different institutions also collect and manage data of their interest. The main results of the findings revealed the need to build necessary skills on GIS and also to develop necessary policies on it in order to have a common language on spatial data sharing.
