Paper Abstract:
|
Metaphors in user interfaces were introduced to give the user a familiar office-like environment in which to act. Despite
metaphors are no longer considered as central elements in design, I propose to reconsider their usefulness. I claim that
behind metaphors lies more crucial and pervasive cognitive dynamics, namely the dynamics of habits as Peirce describes
them. By discussing some examples from an ongoing research on GUIs I show how a focus on habits can at the same
time overcome metaphorsÂ’ shortcomings and provide powerful tools to analyze and predict the user experience. |
