Paper Abstract:      Augmented reality applied to vehicle head-up display is one of the emerging driver-vehicle interaction technology for driving safety and convenience. The purpose of this application is to provide efficiently the real-world information which driver should process while driving aligned with the driver’s view and as a result, enhance decision-making and safe driving. To achieve this purpose, we draw four key issues; what kind of information should be provided, how to provide the information aligned with the driver’s view, how to interact with the driver efficiently to enhance driving safety, and what kind of display system is necessary. According to these issues we have been developing technologies for driving situation awareness, registration of virtual objects with real world, interaction management strategy, and in-vehicle head-up display. We have integrated these technologies into the in-vehicle augmented reality S/W engine prototype and installed it in the vehicle, and tested in real road.
