Paper Abstract:      The purpose of the study was to determine if there were any differences in attrition and grade distribution between traditional and web-based courses. Four years worth of data (over 10,000 records) for courses in Computer Applications, which were taught in both traditional lecture format and in a web-based format, has been compiled and analyzed with regard to withdrawal rate and grade distributions. The analysis of that data demonstrates that there is a marked difference in the rate of withdrawal but not in the grade distributions. Fifty-two percent of the students in the web-based sections dropped the course compared to approximately one-third of the students in the lecture sections. The distribution of grades (A – F) was quite similar in both cohorts except for a slightly larger number of ‘F’ grades in the web-based classes. Recommendations for additional data gathering and potential interventions are included.
