Paper Abstract:      Current CAD tools are sophisticated but not sufficiently intuitive and interactive for use by a layman. This limits the benefits of participatory design, as customers are not able to use these tools to express their design ideas. In this paper, a simple and fast CAD environment enabled by Augmented Reality (AR) technologies, ARCADE, is presented. Using tangible interaction tools supported by AR, the users can create new designs through modifying and combining both virtual and real objects. This approach of design generation allows the users to create designs, and visualize and contextualize them in a real design space. A preliminary user study has been conducted and the results suggested that ARCADE is simple and fast enough for use by the layman. This implies that the contributions of the customers in participatory design can be augmented using ARCADE.
