Paper Abstract:      A study carried out in the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM, the biggest public university in México City), is presented in this paper. It is a survey applied to 346 undergraduate students in their first year at the university, to inquire about their habits, abilities and preferences on the use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) in their academic process and in their socialization activities. In recent years an ascending tendency in the availability and use of Internet in the country has been noted. Higher education institutions are interested to know how the undergraduate students use these digital tools in his academic process. The results provide evidence on how the ICT are a part of the students’ social - communicative environment since they initiate their professional schooling. In their academic and socialization activities, the students frequently use cellular phones, Internet navigation, instantaneous messaging, email, discussion boards and social network services. Besides, for a great part of the students, it is important to belong to some Internet social community.
