Paper Abstract:
|
This paper describes an example of a character network that is extracted based on the co-occurrence of characters in texts
from a detective novella. Two types of character networks are constructed based on the elements of the text, in which
nodes and links correspond to characters and their co-occurrence relations within the text, respectively. Characters and
co-occurrence relations between them are extracted within a paragraph and a chapter according to the types of character
networks. The character networks are created for each paragraph and chapter. These extracted character networks for the
previous paragraphs and chapters are cumulated along with the storyline. As a result, a cumulative character network
based on a paragraph and one based on a chapter are constructed. The former is useful for capturing local changes, while
the latter is for capturing global ones. By observing these two types of cumulative character networks, it is feasible to
distinctly observe the fluctuations in the number of characters within the novella, as well as the number of their
interactions which corresponds to the frequency of co-occurrence among characters. By using two types of character
networks, the structure of interaction and closeness among characters are suitably analyzed. |
