Paper Abstract:

This paper is a research in progress report, which aims to evaluate Internet services provided through the web sites of Portuguese Public Libraries. It provides a situation analysis of the current state of
web-based service provision by Portuguese public libraries. Statistical data and a comparison with indicators in the European Union are presented. Public libraries in Portugal are discussed as members of the National Network of Public libraries. In this context, a description and critic is undertaken on the several approaches and mechanisms by which these libraries in Portugal are meeting the challenges posed by the Information Society. Faced with a fast improving scenario in terms of general library infrastructures, the authors make specific comments and proposals concerning the development, maintenance and homogenization of web service provision by public libraries. |
