Paper Abstract:
|
Due to smartphones' widespread use, it is possible to gather self-reports in addition to passively measuring states and
behaviours (such as locations, movement, activity, and sleep) using built-in sensors and the operating system of the
smartphoneall on a single device that typically follows participants around all day. The existing research ignores specific
app category details in favour of concentrating just on the usage patterns of smartphones. This study closes this gap by
concentrating on the various applications that were used and the start and end periods of each app session. A smartphone
application is used to create the dataset for this purpose, objectively documenting user actions. The Mann-Whitney U test
was employed for inferential analysis, with the goal of identifying patterns of communication app and gaming app
interaction within the subset of the SPACE app that was used. Unexpectedly, the findings revealed that youngsters spend
more extended periods on smartphones compared to grownups, highlighting distinctions influenced by age. This study
highlights the widespread use of communication apps by finding that age and gender have no significant impact on the
number of daily launches or amount of time spent using them. On the other hand, age-related differences are evident in the
use of gaming apps; youngsters launch more games every day and spend more time using them than do grownups. The
thorough investigation also reveals gender- and age-specific app-specific behaviours, providing important information for
designing interventions or tactics that cater to a range of populations. Overall, the study adds to a more complex knowledge
of the dynamics of smartphone and app usage and offers insightful viewpoints for directing future research. |
