Paper Abstract:      The research question posed in this paper is to what extent and in which ways can adaptive digital learning environments assist non-native speakers to overcome cultural and language barriers to learning. Cultural and language barriers are considered from two aspects: firstly those that impede students acquisition of knowledge and skills within the English speaking context, and secondly those that hinder students’ ability to apply new knowledge and skills within the home culture environment. Throughout the paper, two case studies are used: higher education and primary schools in the UK. We propose the adoption of a Culturally Adaptive Technology (CAT) framework, which provides support to international students and minority ethnic groups in the following areas: language development and assistance, curriculum acquisition and fair assessment.
