Paper Abstract:      Today, health care in many countries faces growing challenges and requirements due to aging societies on the one hand and hyperalimentation – especially of young generations – on the other hand. Consequently, an increasing number of researchers have directed their focus to the question of how health activities in daily life can be monitored and stimulated by computerized tools. First stage in these concepts often represents the sensing of physical activities ranging from simple body movements up to particular exercising. One trend in research is, e.g., to use for this purpose smartphones, since these devices are nowadays equipped with various sensors for acceleration, rotation and orientation. The corresponding base question, whether this inviting approach of using sensors of commercial devices is really feasible and applicable in terms of accuracy, representatively is missing completely in such investigations. For complementing this research situation, the aim of the fundamental work here is a comparative evaluation of typical body movement sensing devices that are available on the consumer market. In controlled walking experiments, the precision of such devices was investigated and compared. The experimental results and the deducted limitations are discussed, and in the end these findings do suggest a rather critical use of commercial devices for the described purpose in health monitoring concepts.
