Paper Abstract:      A novel method to speed up the encoding process for conventional Fractal Image Compression is presented in this paper. Two parameters, area and entropy, are introduced to index the candidate blocks, and a kd-tree is used to store the sorted image blocks. Experiment results show that the new method runs much faster than the conventional Fractal Image Compression method does. The encoding time is significantly reduced and the quality of the reconstructed image is satisfactory.
