Paper Abstract:      This paper presents a tablet application to support persons with disabilities, especially those with hearing disabilities and developmental disorders, in interacting with other people and in understanding and preparing for transitions between activities. They face disadvantages with respect to communication. Our tablet application recognizes words spoken by their communication partners using a speech recognition system and arranges the pictures corresponding to the speech-recognized words in a sequence. It has four functions: registering a new picture, making a sequence, browsing the sequence, and assessing user's achievement in performing the activities of a schedule. Each pictures has some tags and our tablet application searches for a picture using the tag. We developed a prototype of our table application and conducted a preliminary experiment in cooperation with Nonprofit Organization. The comments received from the experimental participants suggested that our tablet application could be useful for those who have difficulties in communication with spoken language and preparing for transitions between activities.
