Paper Abstract:      This paper describes the results of a 2-year research project funded by Enterprise Ireland, the national R&D funding agency of Ireland. Although the project is not yet finished, promising results have been obtained in the development of a simple, low-cost B2B solution, aimed particularly at SME’s. A central concept is the use of open-source software where available, but also to leverage the results of a previous project, XESS, which has developed a business document router and rules engine. While not linked specifically to any particular ERP system, the enableSME system is able to integrate with such systems for the purposes of product catalogue extraction, the input of electronic order information, and the generation of alerts and business intelligence information based on monitoring of events within the ERP system. The enableSME portal fulfils a number of purposes. It is used to publish the product catalogue (synchronised with the ERP product information) and accept orders and route them to the appropriate person, place or application. It is used to allow suppliers and customers to securely view their respective information. It is used by the SME owner to monitor key business performance indicators. This latter task can be done both at the desktop, and remotely using a hand-held PC.
