Paper Abstract:      In Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs), efficient loading of energy-constrained gateways is crucial for extending the life of the gateway’s battery and thereby increasing the life of the entire WSN. In this paper, we present a Fuzzy Load Controller (FLC) to handle the issue of gateway loading. The objective is to maximize the life of the gateways by balancing the load among different gateways subject to the energy constraints thereby maximizing the life of entire WSN. We have first modeled this problem as an optimization problem using Zero-One Integer programming with ‘Complete Enumeration’ technique. We have then used fuzzy logic to handle the same scenario. Simulation results comparing fuzzy solution and the optimal solution have been presented. Comparison of the results, in terms of rate of energy consumption and total remaining energy of the gateways for both the optimized and fuzzy cases indicates that our fuzzy solution closely resembles the classical optimized solution obtained using zero-one integer programming. Fuzzy Load Controller (FLC), however, has the advantages of being soft, simple and tunable. The same FLC can be used for different Gateway platforms with little tuning effort.
