Paper Abstract:      Visualisation is a key approach to providing quick understanding of complex concepts. Presently very few visualisation systems attempt to understand the user in order to support the selection of the most appropriate visualization for the user and the task at hand. This paper will convey the requirements for an approach to address this deficiency. We will then introduce a diagnostic model that can enable a visualisation system to aid the recommendation of effective visualisations to the user. The components of the model will be described and the underlying empirical and theoretical support will be described.
