Paper Abstract:
|
In this paper, we present new ways of enhancing existing methods of sharing and communicating HIV/AIDS epidemic
information to the secondary school students in Uganda. In the last decade, a number of approaches have been used to
communicate AIDS preventive measures in Uganda. The existing practices include use of radio, school drama performed
by children, email, static web content for AIDS education, classroom instructions using standard HIV/AIDS textbooks
and story books for children to learn about effects of AIDS on individuals and society. These existing practices can be
complemented by advanced IT solutions such as social networking e.g. web 2.0- services, web-based databases for
automating counseling services and web-based instructional content and assessment for testing how children understand
online content via HIV/AIDS learning objects in order to enhance and improve the preventive actions against the
epidemic. We propose five components as a starting point for designing an online learning environment for HIV/AIDS
education and counseling services to the youth in Uganda. Furthermore, based on the five components and analysis of
existing solutions for HIV/AIDS educational and counseling services in Uganda, functional requirements for designing
web-based HIV/AIDS preventive education and counseling services to youth in Uganda is presented. The requirements
framework can be used to design and develop HIV/AIDS preventive learning environments also outside of the original
design context |
