Paper Abstract:      This work deals with the Functional Mock-Up Interface, which is becoming more and more popular in simulation tools since 2011. Developed with a focus on ordinary differential equation or differential algebraic equation based models arising from Modelica models we discuss the extension on Partial Differential Equation based models discretized using the finite element method (FEM). The suggested approach allows to generate Functional Mock-up Units (FMU) for co-simulation purpose without the need of classical tool coupling and thus without all its draw-backs concerning interoperability and intellectual property protection. For the suggested open source components – mainly the SUNDIALS package for time integration and the UMFPACK solver for sparse linear systems – a case study was performed concerning aspects of integration and efficiency including numerical issues.
