Paper Abstract:      The widespread use of mobile computing has lead to the convergence of many services to that platform. Among those functionalities, we highlight the possibility of using mobile devices as a digital wallet. In this sense, this work aims at presenting an architectural model for a mobile payment system. In the proposed model, we assume independence of devices, of location, of mobile carrier, and of financial industry (banks and credit card companies), allowing many kinds of payments. Because of these characteristics, we position our model, named 4iPay, in the ubiquitous commerce field. In this article, we present a solution in terms of architecture, business model, usability, low bandwidth consumption and high performance in payment and receipt transactions. We also consider issues such as device independence, physical location, security and reliability, and other concerns related to mobile commerce transactions, for example optimizing communications protocols usage and flexibility in local and remote connections. To evaluate our model, we developed an Android prototype and carried out two evaluations, one related to performance issues and other regarding usability. The results were encouraging and reinforce the feasibility of employ 4iPay in real scenarios.
