Paper Abstract:      This paper analyses various ways in which online fora have been used in language teaching, focusing particularly on task design. Different studies reviewed here suggest that free online discussion cannot be relied on to achieve educational goals such as a collaborative construction of knowledge. When learners write in a foreign language, task design plays a fundamental role in fostering learning and collaboration. Following a review of previous research, this paper singles out the main factors to be considered in task design for online fora in language teaching.
