Paper Abstract:      The rapid uptake of mobile access globally and the continuous technological developments in the field are opening up significant opportunities for healthcare. Mobile health (mHealth) represents the state-of-the-art of healthcare and is expected to play a fundamental role in the restructuring of healthcare systems. In particular, mHealth can support innovative models of care by placing the patient at the center and contribute to the sustainability of healthcare systems. The real value of mHealth is that it can overcome temporal, locational as well as organizational constraints thus providing a flexible and efficient continuum of healthcare. The European market is offering a vast potential for mHealth and consequently a number of related initiatives are taking place. Nevertheless, the full unlock of mHealth in Europe is impeded by regulatory challenges. The aim of this paper is to reflect on the current state of mHealth in Europe and on open and challenging regulatory issues that need to be addressed. The end goal of this reflection is to act as a forum for an ongoing dialogue and ultimately a coordinated roadmap for the ecosystem of mHealth.
