Paper Abstract:      Systems designed for management and usage of personal digital multimedia collections often assume that the size of such collections are small, and their users can rely on simple browsing and searching techniques for accessing their contents. Although these assumptions have generally been true in the past, they are changing rapidly; the size of personal digital collections growing astronomically. However, before more advanced personal digital library management systems can be developed, it is important to understand how people actually collect, manage, access, and share digital media over the Internet. This paper presents findings from two separate studies we have conducted to identify issues related to ordinary people’s habits in capturing, storing and sharing photographs and music. Our results indicate that there are clearly many similarities in how users deal with these two different media. These common characteristics can be used for designing more comprehensive tools for management of multimedia digital libraries, both personal and public.
