Paper Abstract:      This paper aims to analyse the structural and cultural barriers for women in developing a career in the IT. Based on data obtained from women returners who work in both the public and private sectors, the paper illustrates the variations between the two sectors for female professionals and the barriers which constrain their career prospects. This cross-sector comparison enlightens the current literature on women’s employment by providing views and experiences as well as recommendations. The study shows that both sectors provide opportunities but simultaneously constrain women’s career development in different ways.
