Paper Abstract:
|
In this paper, we discuss some challenges in designing for and with a special education class in an elementary school. The original objective of the project was to design an educational app for the iPad together with children and their teacher. Even though the class consisted of only six students, diversity of stakeholderÂ’s needs and the need for increased methodological and ethical sensitivity were both interesting and challenging for us as designers. The design was strongly influenced by issues the children had and their vulnerabilities. The objective shifted from design of an educational app towards value-based design and an app that could benefit the students in their daily lives. The paper describes challenges in adapting the design process to users and situations that arose. It also describes our solution, a prototype for a behavior awareness game that was developed, tested and evaluated. |
