Paper Abstract:      The ever-increasing sizes of scientific data make it difficult for scientists to effectively visualize and understand simulation results. A viable solution is utilizing the information and knowledge derived from data to assist visualization analysis process. In this paper, we review the concepts of information theory, discussing potential usefulness for visualization. Then, we provide some applications of information theory in multivariate time-varying scientific data visualization. The experiments demonstrate that the development of information theory based methods can accelerate visualization speed, mining implicit knowledge, and remarkably improve the way in which scientists understand large scale scientific data.
